Welcome to the International Consensus Meeting on Open Injuries

Open Injuries of Limbs are becoming increasingly more common in many parts of the world due to road traffic accidents, sports and work place injuries. They involve damage to skin, functional and skeletal tissues in a variable manner and can often pose challenges in decision to salvage and also choose the right reconstruction sequence and pathways. There is a lot of variation starting from the very definition to critical decision making across different regions in the world.

The International Consensus Meeting on Open injuries organized by Ganga Hospital is a global initiative aimed at achieving consensus on various grey areas of management involving experts across the world. This is a collective effort bringing together an international panel of orthopaedic trauma surgeons, plastic surgeons, infectious disease specialists, and researchers from high-volume trauma centres and academic institutions worldwide.

The primary objective of this initiative is to systematically evaluate current evidence and expert opinion to develop consensus recommendations addressing key areas of open injury management, including:

  • Pre-hospital and emergency room management
  • Limb salvage versus amputation
  • Optimal timing and principles of surgical debridement
  • Skeletal stabilization strategies
  • Soft tissue management and reconstructive techniques
  • Infection prevention and antibiotic protocols

Despite significant progress in trauma care, substantial variation persists in clinical practice due to heterogeneity in injury patterns and limitations in high-quality evidence. This consensus seeks to standardize care pathways and support informed clinical decision- making through a structured and transparent methodology. The final consensus statements, along with supporting evidence summaries, will be disseminated through peer-reviewed publication and made accessible via this platform. We invite clinicians, researchers, and healthcare professionals interested in open injury management to participate in this international collaborative initiative.
